Broken Tooth on Front: Restorative Solutions

If you are dealing with a broken tooth, you are probably suffering some pain and discomfort. This can also be an embarrassing situation, especially if the break is on a front tooth where it is visible. You may struggle in social settings and may want to hide your smile too. Fortunately, there are ways to restore your tooth with dental treatments. You will not have to live with this condition any longer.

Common causes for broken front teeth

Teeth are strong and can hold up to harsh treatment and everyday use. This does not mean they are indestructible. Teeth are susceptible to breaks due to slips and fall as well as due to contact in sports and other physical activities. People also break teeth by eating hard food or by suffering car or bike accidents. Front teeth often bear the brunt of these incidents, especially when there is a blow to the face.

Veneer

If a patient’s broken tooth is a minor issue, a veneer could be the right option. With this intervention, the dentist will place a customized shell over the front of the tooth to cover the break or chip. A veneer is usually made of porcelain and resin. It is also resistant to stains and will do a sound job of allowing the patient to continue biting and eating normally. The dentist will also ensure that the veneer matches the color shade of the rest of the teeth.

Bonding or crown

Another possible solution for smaller breaks is bonding. With this treatment, the dentist will apply composite resin to the tooth to build up the area. A nice aspect of this procedure is that numbing the tooth often is not necessary. It is also a fast process, though it may not be as long-lasting as veneers. Crowns are also a viable option. With this procedure, the dentist will shave down part of the affected tooth and will place a cap over the entire tooth.

Extract the broken tooth and put in implants

When the break is severe, saving the tooth may not be possible. This is often the case if the fracture occurred because of an accident. If the damage is too significant, the dentist may have to pull it out. In its place, the person may prefer to have an implant. If the patient elects to go this route, the dentist will place screws in the jaw and attach an artificial replacement tooth to it. The tooth is made to last and will help ward off bone loss and other issues.

There is hope

It can be frustrating to break a tooth and have this cosmetic blemish. You do not have to live with anxiety over this challenge, however. Talk to your dentist today about undergoing some of these treatments. Depending on how bad the break is or what the condition of the roots and gums look like, the dentist will recommend a solution. Whether you decide to use bonding, a veneer or implants, you can experience the happiness of a new smile.
