Mini Dental Implants: The Pros and Cons

Mini dental implants are alternatives to regular dental implants. Much like regular dental implants, mini dental implants are used to replace a lost tooth’s root. They are roughly half the size of regular dental implants.

Mini dental implants and regular dental implants

There are many differences between the two types of implants, other than size. Mini dental implants are more affordable, heal faster and generally do not require bone graft procedures. Mini dental implants are implanted into a patient’s jaw in a much shorter span of time — usually one office visit.

The procedure of inserting a mini dental implant is simpler than that used for a traditional dental implant and is minimally invasive. This typically means that the patient receiving mini implants will experience less discomfort during the procedure and will recover more quickly.

What are some pros and cons of mini dental implants?

Mini dental implants have several advantages over traditional dental implants. Some of these advantages are that they are cheaper than traditional implants, do not generally require bone grafting and have a much faster recovery period. They can also be used to support removable dentures, providing patients who wear traditional dentures more confidence, stability and comfort.

Mini dental implants can be easily cleaned, help improve speech and make it easier to chew and bite. If used to secure traditional dentures, they reduce denture slipping and discomfort and eliminate the need for bonding agents or adhesives.

Some of the disadvantages may include increased stress on a patient’s jawbone which may result in longer healing time. Traditional dental implants provide stronger chewing and greater bite strength. Mini dental implants have O-rings which must be periodically replaced when they become loose. They are not recommended for people who grind their teeth, as this may cause mini implants to wear out much more quickly than ordinary.

Regular dental hygiene is the best way to prevent tooth loss

A dentist will discuss various forms of treatment and advise a patient about what may be best for them. Patients should always be sure to follow a good oral hygiene routine, which includes flossing once daily and brushing at least twice a day with a soft-bristle toothbrush and a toothpaste which contains fluoride. Patients should also schedule regular dental checkups at least once every six months to ensure that their oral health is maintained adequately. Doing so can help ensure that a dentist spots any problems before they turn into major oral health issues.

Interested in mini dental implants?

If a patient currently wears dentures or has lost teeth that need to be replaced, their dentist may recommend mini dental implants. These may present advantages over regular implants, especially if a patient has smaller teeth which may need to be replaced. If this is the case, the patient may want to consider mini dental implants. Any patient who wants to know more about mini dental implants should contact a dental professional today to discuss available options.
